Vision statement / Artistic goals: Musical excellence and a supportive environment for enjoyable learning and performance are two key features of the MGLC; members challenge stereotypes and stand as proud role models for those struggling with their sexuality or identity

Choir performs: Both unaccompanied & accompanied

Musical Repertoire: Ranges from traditional choral music to contemporary, gospel and show tunes; accompanied by various instruments and some choreographed movements

YOUTH CHORUS

The MELBOURNE GAY AND LESBIAN YOUTH CHORUS is a "chorus within a chorus"; the MGLYC strives to provide young people between 16 and 25 with a fun, safe and friendly environment in which to develop their singing skills

Choir performs: Both unaccompanied & accompanied

Year Choir formed: 2005

Membership Fees: Singing Member $120 p.a. (conc. available)

 

JOINING REQUIREMENTS

Audition: Yes - a 4 week trial, followed by an audition which comprises singing a song, short aural and rhythm exercises

Minimum Attendance policy - Rehearsals: Yes Concerts: Yes

Membership Fees: Singing Member $250 p.a. (conc. available); Associate (Non-Singing) memberships available

Ability to read music: Desirable

Sight-reading ability: Desirable

 

REHEARSAL ARRANGEMENTS

Usual rehearsal night(s): Wednesday; in addition, sectional rehearsals held by arrangement

Rehearsal venue: Ruskin Hall, Melba Conservatorium of Music (to change in 2009)

Sample of the Choir's past Concert Venues: local churches, libraries, hospitals, theatres, civic centres, outdoor festivals, city plazas, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Town Hall, ABC Iwaki Auditorium, National Gallery of Victoria's Great Hall and Macarthur Gallery, Royal Exhibition Buildings, St Paul's Cathedral, Conservatorium of Music, Sydney Town Hall, ABC Eugene Goosens Hall (Sydney), Llewellyn Hall (Canberra), Elder Hall (Adelaide), Sydney Opera House, BMW Edge (Federation Square), The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Federation Square), Monsalvaat, and in Europe, Vienna's Karlskirche Cathedral and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw

Examples of musical pieces performed: The choir sings a diverse repertoire of anthems, show tunes, popular songs, world music, folk, gospel, jazz, carols, madrigals, classical, religious and contemporary works which may be accompanied or ‘a cappella’
