DETAILS ABOUT THE CHOIR

Vision statement / Artistic goals: To present excellence in performance of a wide variety of music

Scholarship Award - An annual vocal scholarship, valued at $1000, to assist in studies, is awarded to an aspiring young soloist, selected after auditions of a number of applicants

Choir performs: Both unaccompanied & accompanied

Musical Repertoire: Classical - oratorio, part songs, madrigals, sacred Easter and Christmas music, ballads, songs from the shows, etc

Musical Director: Ian Lowe

No. of years in current post: since 2009

Previous musical experience: Vocal studies at Melba Conservatorium of Music under Ian Field; advanced vocal studies in Germany, received International Scholarship from Austrian Government enabling him to perform in Salzburg, Prague, Barcelona and Norway; for 13 years (1983-1996), performed a wide range of opera, operetta and oratorio repertoire in Europe; from 1996 began teaching singing at many Melbourne school and colleges including Camberwell Grammar and Xavier College, and began teaching at Melbourne University Conservatorium of Music in 2007; now enjoys adjudicating eisteddfods and vocal competitions and examining

Audition: No

Minimum Attendance policy - Rehearsals: No Concerts: Yes

Membership Fees: $35 annually $7 weekly

Ability to read music: Desirable

Sight-reading ability: Desirable

Sample of the Choir's past Concert Venues: MLC James Tatoulis Auditorium and Flockart Hall, Hawthorn Town Hall, BMW Edge Theatre at Federation Square, Sacred Heart Church (Kew) and many suburban churches and Retirement Villages

Examples of musical pieces performed: Stainer's Crucifixion, Olivet to Calvary (Maunder), Gershwin Medley, selections from Elijah (Mendelssohn), Messiah (Handel), The Seasons and The Creation (Haydn), and musical comedy medleys and songs from shows

Touring: Yes - Melbourne Metro Area/Regional Victoria

Administration / Governance arrangements for the Choir: The Melbourne Singers Inc. is an Incorporated Association managed by a Committee of Management appointed under the Associations Incorporation Act

Types of Committees: Management Committee - 11 Officers and 4 Ordinary members; the President, Secretary and Treasurer act as an executive, as appropriate
